A beginner's guide to gardening

Follow this little guide we have put together, so you can arm yourself with the basics of gardening.

Here at Mone Bros DIY, we feel that a garden is never perfect, and gardening is not an exact science, even the best gardeners make mistakes from time-to-time. So, if you’re just starting out in gardening, there is no need to be intimidated. Be sure to follow this little guide we have put together, so you can arm yourself with the basics of gardening.

Choose the perfect plants for your soil

Is your soil light and sandy or heavy and clay? This something you need to check before you buy any plants. Most plants perform better in one type of soil compared to the other. If you’re unsure, take a look at what type of plants are growing in your neighbour’s garden, or simply ask them for their advice.

Give plants enough space

One thing many beginner gardeners are guilt of is going to the garden centre, getting extremely excited and buying too many plants for the garden. It’s important that you make sure plants are spaced out well, if they aren’t, they will struggle to survive or if they do, they will need more frequent watering and fertilising.

 Plan ahead

After you’ve bought your plants, but before you start to do any actual planting, you need to plan it all out. Place all your young plants and bulbs on the surface of your soil, so you are happy with the spacing and the arrangement of your bed.

Be brutal with weeds

A gardener’s arch nemesis – weeds. Be sure to weed regularly and remove all of their roots. If you find that there are seeds clinging on to the weeds, don’t put them in the compost heap. You will be re-using the seeds when you spread the compost.
