By being smart with your landscaping, you can lower your energy bills by a significant amount, all year round. Transform the whole of your garden, in particular your lawn by learning how to arrange your plants for maximum efficiency, which will lead to lower heating and cooling costs.

‘But how can I do this?’ we hear you say. Not to worry, here are our top tips to improve your energy efficiency via smart landscaping.

Create dead space

If you plant shrubs, vines and bushes around the walls of your home, you trap an insulating pocket of ‘dead air’ which can help regulate temperature in all four seasons. But don’t plant too close, this can cause problems with your foundation, encouraging pests to get through.

Don’t waste water

When choosing which plants you’re going to invest in for your garden, choose ones which are acclimated to the environment and plant them where they’re going to get the most light and shade. Then only water them when they absolutely need it - when they need moisture, and make sure you water them on the coolest part of the day to avoid unnecessary evaporation.

Another great tip is to choose plants with a strong root system, which will keep the soil in place and lead to a more efficient environment.

Cool down with trees

By having trees in your garden, your home won’t be exposed to as much sun thanks to the shade that the trees will provide. The shade can reduce your cooling costs by up to 25% and can drop the temperature by six degrees – not just that, a cooler house can make your air conditioning run 10% more efficiently, which will prolong its life as well as cutting down costs.
