How to use stones and rocks within a landscaped garden

Rocks and stones may not be the first things that come to mind when people think about landscaping their garden.

Rocks and stones may not be the first things that come to mind when people think about landscaping their garden. However, whilst flowers and grass may be the most common components of a garden, stones and rocks can also be used to complement more traditional features to great effect. Here are three of our favourite ways of incorporating them into a landscaped garden:

1. In a stone wall

We’re not talking Hadrian’s Wall scale here, rather small-sized stacked stone walls which can be used to create features such as planting beds. To create a stone wall, choose stones which have two flat edges – sedimentary kinds such as limestone and sandstone are ideal. The whole family can have fun creating this functional as well as visually appealing feature.

2. Within a water feature

Another way to include stones within your garden is as part of a water feature. They will emphasise the natural appearance of the water as well as add character to it.

3. As pathway paving

Depending on the size of your garden, it may even be possible to use stones to form part of a pathway. Again this will enhance the look of your garden as well as accentuate its natural features.

If you don’t have a very big garden don’t despair though – small stones can also be used in plant pots to add charm. A particularly good combination is the use of stones with succulents, where they can be arranged to great effect, whatever the space you have available.
